  • happiness in 9 easy steps

Because, as my creative writing teacher explained, odd numbers are more realistic. Say 4:13 pm instead of 4:15, it draws a person in more.

    1. Be Whimsical

Blow bubbles. Carry a yo-yo. Fly a kite. Wish on the eyelashes you find in the morning. Just because you did certain things as a child, doesn't make them childish. They can still be fun.

    2. Go barefoot on nice days

And I don't just mean in your yard or out in the neighborhood. I mean kick off your shoes wherever you are (so long as it's legal) and connect yourself to the earth. Drive barefoot (the best way to drive, if you ask me). Just watch out for spiders and bees.

    3. Love

Seems simple, but it isn't. The trick is to love unconditionally, without expecting anything in return. It takes some getting used to, but is worth it. Cook dinner for your friends. Make your neighbors a batch of cookies. Compliment random strangers on their awesome neon sneakers. Love is not a feeling, it is a habit.

    4. Be a duck

By this, I mean be as a duck in a rainstorm. Let negative things roll off you and drip harmlessly onto the ground. This also takes practice, but the dramatic reduction in stressors is more than worth it.

    5. Make Art

It doesn't matter if you're good at it or not. Doodle, paint, decoupage, scrapbook, write, take pictures, whatever it might be. Crafts are good for the soul.

    6. Listen to music. All the damn time.

And sing along, no matter how terrible you are.

    7. Look up.

Ignore the risks of tripping. I know they're there. Trust me, I stumble over my own feet all the time. But the sky is lovely. It really does make you feel more positive by just gazing upwards. As a bonus, if you look at the sky enough other people start looking up too, trying to discern what you're looking at. That's always good for a giggle.

    8. Get dressed up for no reason at all.

Don't you feel automatically awesome when you're dolled up? I do.

    9. Laugh!

If there isn't much humor in your life, find some. Watch comedy programs on TV. Rent hilarious movies. Nothing makes for lasting happiness more than regular, hearty laughter. May I recommend some Mighty Boosh? :)

Now go out there, and have some fun.

Good advice all around (I especially love the one about being a duck, not enough people think about that one).
